Plank floors: one of the oldest forms of flooring in the world

Along with wooden paving, floorboards are one of the oldest forms of wooden flooring. Other names for floorboards are strip flooring or ship flooring. In the early forms of this natural floor covering, the long boards, called floorboards, were taken from a tree trunk and nailed onto already laid beams. Later, this developed into parquet floors made of shorter wooden boards that are joined together using a tongue and groove all the way around.

A plank or parquet floor is pleasing with its large-scale appearance and natural appearance. Today, such floors can also be made in multi-layer construction and combined with modern underfloor heating. Such solid wooden floors can be treated with open-pored wax or oil or covered with a water-based and particularly easy-care acrylic varnish.

The floorboards can be made from local woods such as oak, maple or beech, or from imported exotic woods. The wood with its distinctive grain can be coloured using natural pigments to match your wooden furniture.

Wooden paving of particular hardness

Wooden paving is about as old as floorboards and is also known as end grain paving and in Austria as Stöckelboden. Thanks to its robustness, wooden paving was once considered a classic industrial floor. Wooden paving was also often laid in public buildings such as libraries or restaurants. The unique aesthetic appeal of wooden paving has long since been discovered for living spaces as well.

The wooden paving consists of many small wooden blocks whose fibers are vertically upwards. This roughly doubles the hardness of the wood. The subfloor of such a wooden paving must be solid. The thickness of wooden parquet can be between two and eight centimeters. Preferred woods for such a paving are oak, pine, spruce and fir.

A floor laid to such a high standard is sanded down and can then be waxed, oiled or sealed. Wood paving is only partially suitable for underfloor heating.
